Masterpiece Marriage (Audible Audio Edition) Gina Welborn Kristin Kalbli Audible Studios Books Reviews

Set in the late 1800s Masterpiece Marriage Quilts of Love Series is in an era of change for American businesses and American women. It is not a typical story and I really enjoyed it. The old-fashioned craft of quilting is set right alongside the heroine trying to become a doctor of botany so she can teach.

The heroine, Mary, is a complex character. She grew up in England and Italy through some good and bad times. She doesn’t want to become a professor to prove any feminist theory, but does it because she truly loves it. However, the pull of old world thinking and being in someone’s debt weighs on her. As it challenges her to exceed it also threatens her if she is found wanting. It is interesting to read how she isn’t sure how to react to the Americans living in the small town with her. It’s a good reminder that to have friends we must be friendly. The friends that she ends up being close with are the ones that reached out to her first; one girl just wouldn’t take no for an answer.

The hero’s big life changes have occurred before the start of the book, but we get to read about them partway through because they strongly affect his thinking and actions. He really only makes one pivotal change in the story, but that’s all he needs to make. The author definitely threw some surprises in about the hero’s back story.

The other characters are varied and interesting. A main supporting character is the hero’s aunt and the heroine’s neighbor – the expert quilter – Priscilla Osbourne. We only get a small insight into what makes her tick and she seems to have a lot under the surface. Arel, on the other hand, is quite open with her thoughts and actions; even if they aren’t always very good ones. I would enjoy reading her story at some point because she seems to have a lot going on, and Mary helped lead her in a better direction.

The point of view switches between the hero and heroine with good success. In the beginning they tend to assume the worst of each other and it is good to have an inside perspective on what is actually being thought. An almighty, omniscient God is mentioned; but there is not much religious content.

This is a step up in the standard boy sees girl, wants girl, gets girl plot. Characters are not humorous in the cute, or even engaging sense. But their strategies will make you smile. Even grin. The hero is a beleaguered male who likes to live in five year plans and is very sure and fairly specific about what he thinks he wants and needs. His aunt, who raised him clearly sees those needs differently. She seems to feel she has a right to direct everyone around her in the nicest manner possible. The heroine thinks she needs independence above all else, and to avoid risk. Both hero and heroine are risk averse, but the matriarch makes it her mission to change that.
In lesser comedies she would show her hand to the reader as she deftly guides everyone else. But not in this story.

It is unclear how she feels about bringing these two together. Does she protest that her nephew is not to pursue the heroine so that she will drive him to do just the opposite? You'll have to read the book to find out. If you enjoy something above and beyond the usual historical romance, this is definitely a must read, about a time and place in our country not often written about. It's set on the eastern shore of Virginia, and anyone who's ever spent much time there will enjoy the writer's portrait of this area and its small town denizens with big social aspirations. This is a lush story, to be savored rather than devoured.
I absolutely love time pieces and Masterpiece Marriage was the perfect writing to settle my addiction for now. The Quilts of Love series is all written by different authors, and I have really enjoyed getting to read such engaging pieces of writing. In this particular book the year is 1891 and follows the story of Zenus Dane. After his textile factory has been extremely damaged from a flood and collapsed roof, his cousin Sean comes to the rescue with some assistance. So much of the fabric is ruined that Zenus had no idea what he was going to do to salvage all of his losses. His business was doomed until Zenus decides that he needs to go and visit his Aunt Priscilla. He needs an idea that will save him from all of his financial losses and his hopes are that she will create a quilt that is so unique that he can market it to get back what all he would have lost by not being able to sell the fabric in whole. The catch is that he and his Aunt have not been on speaking terms for a whole now. When Mary Varrs, his Aunt's neighbor, is introduced to Zenus she is in the midst of quilting with other women. Aunt Priscilla is not one to be messed with as she is a strong character but there is way more love there than readers may think. Her past experiences are what makes her the way that she is and you have to respect her.
This story was not what I was expecting at all with all of the in touch moments with the characters instead of solely focusing on the time period and the quilting that took place in it. I loved all of the interactions that took place between Mary and Zenus. Their relationship is one that is easy to follow. Women were definitely treated differently in this time period and so woman's suffrage is addressed. All of the positive and negative sides of this time for women are shared. I really enjoyed reading about it because all that you tend to hear in the history books is the shortened and watered down version of what a woman's life were really like. My wheels were definitely turning as I read all of the scenes and the character's actions and emotions. I was so busy in my head comparing the way women have it now and the way that women were treated and talked to back in 1891. The characters had me laughing and relating with them so much and I was sad to see this book end. The ending left me wanting more and I can not wait to read more of the books in the Quilts of Love Series. This book is highly recommended by me that you give it a read!
