Gary Beaumont, irreverent and excitable, is an accomplished and devoted musician. His guitarist partner Colin Hensley, composed, intellectual and equally gifted, is far less sanguine. A fault line runs between Colin’s artistic and scientific abilities—every shift disrupts careers, plans, relationships. Skilled and charismatic, he is haunted by a 1971 tour in Vietnam and a long-gone, but near-fatal, heroin addiction. Colin is captivated by defiant, solitary and willfully self-sufficient Jeannette Hughes who comes to listen to a gig the musicians play in her hometown, a rural Canadian village. A few years later, with nothing to lose and Colin now a college professor in physics, they cheerfully intertwine their lives for nearly a decade, finding a rare joy in each other. Then the fault line fractures and the music that brought them together now rips them apart. Jeannette suddenly finds she has everything to lose—that Colin and the indiscriminate loveliness of his and Gary’s music have become an inseparable part of her. Six years later, a mutual tragedy forces Colin and Jeannette together once more, only to discover the indelible imprint fractious Gary Beaumont has left on them both, and forcing them to face hard realities about the delights and wreckage of their past decisions. Pilgrim is an incisive and poignant story of the twenty-year journey of three people’s intersecting lives. A portrayal of personal triumphs and failures, survival, the bonds that tie relationships, the integrity of friendship, romantic and platonic love—and the various shades in between, the inspiration of intellectual rigor and competence. And the enduring power and light of music.
Pilgrim The music The silence And the distance in between Christina Hattingh 9781514242759 Books
In its most simple form this is a love story set against the backdrop of music, those who love to make it and those who love to listen. The author describes to us the almost magical creative process of music being made. The natural abilities that allow these gifted people to create a sensory pleasure enjoyed by so many. These are described to us with wonderful sense of understanding and love for both the music and those who make and play it.
The love story itself is like a teenage love found love lost except it takes them way beyond their teenage years to finally get honest and come to grips with what they know to be true in their hearts, but thats often a trait in romance to keep the story alive. If happy ever after comes to soon then you've no story.
The characters are well defined yet sometimes I found them acting in a way that seemed hard to relate too and illogical, ultimatums given without any buildup just boom!. But not everyone thinks like I do and there will be those that find their behavior quite acceptable. I didn’t.
The author writes with a wonderful sense of illustration with a single line she can make a scene come alive. There are many wonderful one liners that make you stop and think which i loved. The writing is sometimes sharp and stinging like a staccato violin and at others soft and soothing like a piano playing all the good notes.
I found myself getting lost in this book which to me is a wonderful thing which in my opinion make this a good read.
I look forward to more by this author.

Pilgrim The music The silence And the distance in between Christina Hattingh 9781514242759 Books Reviews
This is a solid and well written novel. I'm left contemplating the characters some time after reading. The truths in human experiences and emotions, strengths and weaknesses, are clearly felt. I look forward to additional novels from Christina Hattingh.
Good story
The reader will enjoy the whirlwind love affair with an analogy of the music and the silence and the distance in between. The novel makes the reader reflect on idiosyncrasies in human nature and the intrigue of life.
Christina paints a picture with words. I visualized the story in my mind’s eye, like a movie in my head as I read the book. I was very impressed because the plot was entirely believable and I found the protagonist and other characters to be true to themselves and their circumstances. The book is a great read!
A great read; it caught my attention early and the grip tightened to the extent that I read it over a weekend (one which I hadn't planned to spend time reading). Most satisfying. The author has a talent for conveying insights into human behavior as well as keen observations while crafting an engaging plot. I find it difficult to believe this is her first foray into fiction. Well done!
A fascinating character study and a deeply insightful description of the power of music. I was hooked on this novel from the first paragraph. Hattingh paints vivid pictures of moments- I could feel, hear and see each scene as if I were present. Her characters are interesting and multi-dimensional. I even loved that their behavior frustrated me at times, because that is what happens with real people in real life, and it also helps to move a story forward. The music scenes were realistic and beautiful, and central to the story. I would love to see a movie of this novel, and I would also like to know what happens to Jeanette and Colin next!
